Monaco GP: Sergio Perez seals victory in Monte-Carlo epic

Sergio Perez sent a statement that he is in the championship fight in F1 this season with a fine drive to win the Monaco Grand Prix on Sunday.

The Mexican started the race in third after a late spin in qualifying on Saturday, with the Grand Prix itself not getting underway for over an hour after its original start time thanks to heavy rain.

In the end, the race did get going, though, and what played out was an absolute epic over the next couple of hours, with Checo the man in the end to emerge victorious as he and his team nailed tyre strategy.

Indeed, whilst pit stops for Charles Leclerc saw the Monegasque drop from the lead down to P4, meaning more bad luck for him at his home race, they were kinder to Perez whose pace allowed him to rise to P1, whilst Carlos Sainz in the other Ferrari was ahead of Max Verstappen in third.

As the threat of rain during the race began to subside, the drivers began to push harder but the trepidation and danger were still more than abundant, especially as Mick Schumacher crashed into the wall at the swimming pool section in what was a really nasty-looking crash.

The cameras cut to the aftermath with his Haas car split in two but thankfully the actual impact with the barriers wasn’t too bad for Mick, and he quickly reported that he was okay.

This happened just after the first third of the race had been completed, though, and with the red flags flying it was clear we were going to be on the clock for the remainder of the Grand Prix.

At the restart, then, the Red Bulls were on medium tyres and the Ferraris on hards, with the Scuderia evidently hoping that tyre wear would provide them with a chance to still win the race, though ultimately that would not come to pass.
