Mokwena on criticism of Sundowns' financial superiority: 'It doesn't frustrate me'

Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Rulani Mokwena has hit back at talks of Sundowns being financially superior to the rest of the DStv Premiership and claims it does not bother him despite the comments intensifying with each passing week.

Sundowns, owned by businessman Patrice Motsepe, are one of the wealthiest clubs in Africa.

In recent weeks, PSL coaches such as Brandon Truter have criticised the spending of Sundowns and more recently Gavin Hunt claimed that Sundowns should be judged in the Champions League instead of the PSL as they have an unfair advantage over the rest of the teams in the league.

Masandawana are 14-points clear of second-placed Richards Bay and have won five DStv Premierships in a row. They look likely to make it a sixth title in a row this season and, as a result, it's raised questions about how and why they have been so dominant.

Despite all the talk surrounding their financial power, Mokwena has never entertained the comments from his fellow coaches and says such talk does not bother him.

"No, it doesn't frustrate me because it is the truth," Mokwena told reporters. 

"If they were lying then I would be frustrated but it does not frustrate me because it is the truth. Maybe I am still to wet behind the ears but my granny used to say, don't be to humble sometimes because people will take it as a sign of weakness and cowardice. 

"Maybe my that's my weakness. I come here instead of praising myself, I praise my players and I will do that as long as I am a football coach because I know the game belongs to the players and I don't play." 

Mokwena says he may be too humble and it gives others the opportunity to speak against him. No matter the result, win or lose, Mokwena does not shine praise for himself, he directs it
