Mokoena takes accountability for part in Bafana exit: ‘If I had taken three more steps’
In Los Angeles
Teboho Mokoena has been reliving the moment that led to Bafana Bafana’s elimination by Canada in the round of 32 at the FIFA World Cup.
Bafana were on the verge of taking the co-hosts to extra time at SoFi Stadium after dominating possession but failing to create clear-cut chances.
South Africa and Canada were both playing in the knockout stage of a World Cup for the first time.
But thanks to the supporters who made the trek from Canada to Los Angeles, the Reds handled the occasion better - putting Bafana defenders and goalkeeper Ronwen Williams under the cosh and forcing them to make a number of goal-bound clearances to keep the game tied at 0-0 after 90 minutes.
As Bafana’s minds and bodies drift to extra time, Jacob Shaffelburg plays an innocuous cross for Canada that Ime Okon clears with a header.
But the ball goes straight to Stephen Eustáquio.
