Broos to decide future ‘in the next days’ after Bafana’s historic World Cup

Hugo Broos’ remarkable five-year journey with Bafana Bafana may not be over just yet.

The South Africa head coach had long maintained that the 2026 FIFA World Cup would mark the end of his managerial career, with retirement expected once his contract expires at the end of June.

But after guiding Bafana to their best-ever World Cup campaign, the 74-year-old admits the next chapter remains unwritten.

Broos was speaking after South Africa’s heartbreaking 1-0 defeat to Canada in stoppage time in the Round of 32 - a cruel end to a tournament that saw Bafana reach the knockout stages for the first time in the nation’s history.

Although the Belgian had previously suggested he would call time on his coaching career after the World Cup, he recently revealed he is open to extending his stay, particularly with the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations on the horizon in Kenya, Uganda and Tanzania.

Now, the decision appears to rest not only with Broos, but also with the South African Football Association.

Less than an hour after the final whistle, the veteran coach admitted he would spend the coming days weighing up his future.

“So, first of all, I’m always open if people need advice. There’s no problem,” he told the reporters.

“Secondly, again I will see in the next days what I will do for the future. I said, always yes this is my last and it is my last World Cup – that is for sure.

“But what will happen in the next days and weeks that depends also a little bit how South Africa see the future and with me. Then we will see.”
