Modric, Kaka, no Zidane or Ronaldinho: Carlo Ancelotti named unreal dream midfield
Carlo Ancelotti has worked with so many legendary midfielders during his career as a manager.
Andrea Pirlo, Ronaldinho, Zinedine Zidane, Clarence Seedorf, Frank Lampard and Kaka are just a few incredible midfielders he’s managed.
But who does he think stands above the rest?
In December 2020, while Ancelotti was still at Everton, Rio Ferdinand got the chance to pick his brain and ask him for his ‘dream midfield’.
Ferdinand presented him with a board of 14 world-class midfielders he has managed during his career.
The Man United legend went first as he named his perfect midfield of players Ancelotti had managed. Ferdinand selected Pirlo, Lampard, Seedorf and Ronaldinho.
Ferdinand then asked Ancelotti to pick his dream midfield. The Italian only agreed with two of Ferdinand’s choices.
Here’s who he went with…
DM: Andrea Pirlo
Pirlo was a truly elegant midfielder. Ancelotti had the pleasure of working with him while at AC Milan.
CM: Frank Lampard
One of the greatest goalscoring midfielders ever. Lampard’s most prolific season came in the 2009/10 season, when Ancelotti was manager. He scored 27 goals for Chelsea that campaign.
CM: Luka Modric
Modric has been a joy to watch throughout his career. Now 36, Modric remains at the peak of his powers and was pivotal in Real’s Champions League winning side in May.
AM: Kaka
Ancelotti was debating over two players for the number 10 position: Kaka and Zidane. He eventually went with Kaka for his ‘efficiency’. The Brazilian was unstoppable in the 2000s and guided AC Milan to the 2007 Champions League title. Ancelotti also worked with him at Real Madrid.
