Millwall boss explains reasons behind George Honeyman capture from Hull City

Gary Rowett believes George Honeyman is coming into the prime of his career, after snatching him away from Hull City. Honeyman completed the formalities of his switch to The Den on Monday before flying out to Ireland to join his new teammates at their pre-season training camp with fellow summer capture Benik Afobe.

Honeyman was a hugely significant character in City's promotion-winning season from League One, scooping various club awards as well as being named in the EFL Team of the Season. His influence continued last term as City stepped up to the Championship.

His departure has been keenly felt both in the Tigers' dressing room and among supporters, who were disappointed to see the energetic midfielder leave, but Lions boss Rowett is delighted to have signed a player of Honeytman's calibre as he looks to improve on last season's impressive ninth-place finish - ten above the Tigers.

“I think he’s a little bit of everything. He’s played in a midfield two, he’s played as a 10, he’s played in a front three," Rowett told newsatden. "There are lots of different options, we’ve got a little bit of flexibility in there. Zian [Flemming] can play as a 10 and can also play in a front two.

“We need to have the ability in games to change things, we need to have the ability in different types of games against different types of opponents to play different ways. We also need to have fierce competition within the group to push us on.

“George knows the Championship. He’s a great character – everyone you speak to says what a top guy he is. He’s got great energy on the pitch and you saw last season he can pop up with goals and set goals up. At 27, I think he’s in the prime of his football career and a fabulous signing for us.
