Millions of people have still not received their £150 council tax rebate

Around 2.7 million households across England are yet to receive a £150 council tax rebate from the government.

Figures published on Thursday revealed that 16.6 million households - 86 per cent of those eligible - had received the one-off payment by the end of July, according to the Department of Levelling Up, Housing and Communities (DLUHC). More households were expected to receive the crucial rebate throughout July.

The department adds that anyone who has not yet received the rebate but is still expecting it should check their council's website and make a claim before the end of September. The rebate is being dished out to homes in council tax bands A to D in England as part of the government's £37 billion cost of living support package.

Levelling Up Secretary Greg Clark said: “I’m pleased to see further progress in paying the council tax rebate out to the millions of households who are eligible to receive it. We want to make sure that those most in need receive the support that they are entitled to help households with the cost of living.

"This is why I am urging everyone to check their eligibility to receive the rebate and contact their councils if they have not.”

While all councils in England have started rolling out the council tax rebate payment, there are processes in place for people who are yet to receive it. The Local Government Association noted earlier this year that those who pay their council tax without direct debit may have to wait longer to receive the payment.

The new figures also reveal that some £2.5 billion has been handed out to A to D council tax properties under the rebate scheme, according to DLUHC.
