Biggar Rugby Club net Sevens double as new coach announced

Biggar Rugby Club’s men’s and ladies’ teams won their own Sevens tournament earlier this month.

On a scorching day, there was a three-way tie in the gents’ competition between Biggar ‘A’, Barbarians and Stewartry after the pool games.

Stewartry took on Biggar in the final after points differential was taken into account, with the hosts coming out to defend the title they won last year.

The ladies’ competition ran a similar course, with Biggar ‘A’ and Stewartry contesting the final, after wins over Cougars and Pigbarians.

Biggar again came out on top, going one better than last year.

President Rab Ramsay presented the trophies to delighted skippers Euan Bogle and Abbie Baillie.

Sam Davidson of Biggar was also presented with the men’s Player of the Tournament award.

Biggar’s Sevens committee, led by Gavin Hill, had a challenging run-up to the event, with at one point 12 teams registered to attend the men’s competition and eight for the women.

However, numbers dwindled in the weeks leading up, and Strathmore Ladies had to withdraw on the day when their bus broke down.

Biggar Rugby Club have appointed Craig Borthwick as head coach of the men’s first XV for the 2024-25 season.

Borthwick has been with the club for four years, latterly as player-coach, and has experience previously with Peebles, Gala and Watsonians.

A Biggar Rugby Club spokesperson said: “Craig has the respect of the dressing room and has already had an initial meeting with the players when he outlined his hopes for the season ahead.

“He is now in the process of recruiting a backs coach, while player recruitment is another major task.”

• Meanwhile, Biggar have announced they will hold a 50th anniversary Marquee Ball on Friday, May 23, 2025.
