Mike Catt: 'We need to find solutions on the hoof'

Playing the referee "on the hoof" is the biggest lesson Ireland learned from last weekend's win over England, says Mike Catt.

The forwards, playing against a scrum containing wing Jack Nowell following Charlie Ewels’ early sending off, conceded six penalties and a free kick during the course of a 32-15 win.

Feedback received from Six Nations officials this week suggested that some of Mathieu Raynal’s calls were incorrect but making valid arguments after the final whistle has blown is not something an international team of Ireland’s standings wants to rely on.

"I think it’s not a boost, more a…it’s a big learning curve for us in terms of us not being able to solve a problem in the moment," said the attack coach ahead of Ireland’s final Guinness Six Nations match against Scotland this afternoon (4.45pm).

"I think that has been one of the key things for us. We’ve got to find a way. To win championships and things like that, and be successful going forward, we need to find solutions on the hoof.

"I think that’s been one of the key things.

"I don’t know much about what goes on in the dark arts of the front row. I’m sure [scrum coach] John Fogarty has sorted that all out for this weekend."

Forward Jack Conan, recalled in place of Peter O’Mahony, added: "There was a lot of talking points and lessons learned from the weekend.

"The referee has come back and said a few decisions went against us when they shouldn’t have but that’s rugby and those things happen. It’s always a good learning curve and we’ll be better for it.

"I know the lads in the front row pride themselves around their bits in the scrum so they were pretty disheartened about it.

"But it will just make us better this weekend and I think they are excited for the challenge and
