Mick Schumacher finds positives despite heartbreaking Canadian GP retirement

Mick Schumacher has opted to take the positives from his weekend at the Canadian Grand Prix, rather than focus on the obvious negative of the retirement from the race thanks to a power unit issue.

The Haas driver achieved his best-ever qualifying in F1 at the weekend as he aced the wet conditions to stick his car on P6, alongside team-mate Kevin Magnussen in P5.

Indeed, it was a great performance from both drivers and though they didn’t expect to retain those places in the Grand Prix with quicker cars out of position behind them, they will have felt that a double points finish would have been on.

However, things did not pan out that way with Magnussen dropping to an eventual P17 after receiving the black and orange flag and needing to pit to replace his front wing, whilst Schumacher crawled to a halt during the race thanks to a PU issue.

Huge disappointment from Haas, but Mick is taking the positives from the weekend – and there are many to take in fairness:

“It’s obviously very frustrating, but these things happen. It’s Formula 1.

“We’ve just got to swallow that pill. But again, we have loads of positive things we can take away from here, so [I’m] just really excited about the next one.

“We knew that we had the pace all along [during difficult races].

“But we had some difficult races, so it’s good to have a good qualifying. It’s good to have a good race pace.

“We haven’t brought any updates, and it’s basically the same car as at the beginning of the season, and we’re still doing great, so it’s obviously very positive.”
