Mick McCarthy appointed as Blackpool head coach

Former Republic of Ireland manager Mick McCarthy has returned to management after he was appointed as head coach of English Championship side Blackpool.

He replaces Michael Appleton, who was dismissed earlier this week with the Tangerines sitting 23rd in the table.

It's McCarthy first role since leaving Cardiff City by mutual consent in October 2021.

"I'm delighted to be here, I'm delighted to be back in the game," McCarthy told the club’s website.

"I'm thrilled to be back up at a club where I've had many battles in the past and hopefully we can achieve some of the similar success of those years."

In Blackpool's ranks are former Shamrock Rovers player Andy Lyons and Republic of International CJ Hamilton, with the latter finding the net in the recent FA Cup win over Nottingham Forest.

"Blackpool Football Club is delighted to announce the appointment of Mick McCarthy as Head Coach for the remainder of the season," a club statement read.

"McCarthy brings a wealth of knowledge and experience to Bloomfield Road, having managed at the highest level both domestically and internationally during his 30 years as a number one.

"Awarded the LMA Championship Manager of the Year on two separate occasions following promotion campaigns with Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers, the 63-year-old also holds a wealth of experience in England's second tier, most recently with Cardiff City.

"Well respected within the game, McCarthy also had a successful playing career with the likes of Barnsley, Manchester City and Celtic.

"Terry Connor will also be joining the Club as McCarthy's assistant at Bloomfield Road. The pair have worked together for many years at the likes of Wolverhampton Wanderers, Ipswich Town and Republic of Ireland."
