Former Bafana mentor Queiroz nails down new gig as Qatar head coach

Less than two months after hosting a ground-breaking FIFA World Cup, Qatar's senior men's national team announced Carlos Queiroz as the new head coach.

The 69-year-old former Bafana Bafana mentor was in charge of Iran at the World Cup.

After losing their opening group game 6-2 against England, Queiroz's side beat Wales 2-0 but saw hopes of reaching the knockout stage ending with a 1-0 defeat to the United States.

The former Real Madrid boss has replaced Felix Sanchez, whose team lost all their group matches, which was a first for a World Cup host nation.

A statement on the Qatar Football Association Twitter feed read: "Carlos Queiroz is the new head coach of #AlAnnabi. We wish the Portuguese coach all the best with our national team."

Some of Queiroz's former jobs include coaching the United Arab Emirates, Colombia, and Egypt and being assistant to Sir Alex Ferguson at Manchester United.
