Michael van Gerwen stars at Players Championship

Michael van Gerwen recorded the highest average in Players Championship history when he dominated Ross Smith 6-1.

The Dutchman then beat Mario Vandenbogaerde 10-6 later in the day to book his place in the quarter-finals.

Van Gerwen set a new record average of 118.52 when he hit double eight to knock Smith out of the competition.

Stephen Bunting battled past Kim Huybrechts 10-8 in a tight affair, hitting double four on his second attempt to seal victory.

Huybrechts failed to replicate his round two heroics from earlier in the day when he beat former world number one beat Gerwyn Price 6-1.

World number four Luke Humphries continued his fine form with a 10-7 victory over Ryan Searle and Luke Woodhouse beat Dave Chisnall 10-8 in an all-English affair.

Ryan Joyce took on Dutch player Jermaine Wattimena and beat him 10-7 before Australia's Damon Heta scraped past Brendan Dolan 10-8.

Gabriel Clemens was ruthless and dominated Niels Zonneveld 10-1.

German Clemens had beaten Josh Rock earlier in the day and will face Woodhouse in Sunday’s quarters.

James Wade cruised to a 10-6 victory over Dimitri van den Bergh in the late match on the main stage.
