Michael Owen identifies which new signing could make the difference for Manchester United

Michael Owen believes a successful debut season for Rasmus Hojlund will prove crucial if Manchester United are to find success this season.

Hojlund was presented as a United player today following the agreement of a £72million deal with Atalanta. The 20-year-old has been in the UK since Tuesday and has put pen to paper on a five-year deal with the option of a further 12 months.

He becomes the third major signing of the summer as United's total spend rises above £160m. Mason Mount arrived from Chelsea at the start of last month while Andre Onana followed his new team out to the United States a fortnight ago.

Owen predicted a fourth-place finish for Erik ten Hag's side, which presents a small drop from last season's third-place finish. But the former Reds striker believes fellow No.9 Hojlund could be the difference-maker, should he hit the ground running.

Following on from his predictions, Owen tweeted: "United have followed the recent trend and bought a ball playing GK. Looks a great buy. At the other end they’ve filled a vital position they’ve been crying out for. If Hojlund is a success, they could be in business."

Ten Hag faces a huge battle to keep his top-four place, last season's major under-performers all investing heavily. Liverpool, Chelsea and Tottenham have all spent money while the likes of Aston Villa and Brighton will hope to kick on and challenge for Champions League football.
