Michael Owen explains why Manchester United are in the title race

Michael Owen has pointed to the form of Manchester City and Arsenal as a reason why Manchester United can count themselves in the title race.

Table-toppers Arsenal lead the way on 51 points, having played two games fewer than United, who are on 46 points. City have played one less game than United and are two points ahead of the Reds in second.

Arsenal have failed to win their last two games while City have won just one of theirs. United's win over Leeds on Sunday followed their 2-2 midweek draw in the reverse fixture at Old Trafford. Arsenal host City on Wednesday which will be the first time the pair meet in the Premier League this season.

Owen pointed to the fact that at least one team is due to drop points in the two matches against each other, which could creak the door open for United.

Asked by Premier League Productions whether Erik ten Hag’s side are in the title race, he said: “Absolutely. If Man City and Arsenal were playing like they were a few months ago, then I would say it’s between those two. But both of them are stumbling.

"Arsenal, one point from six. Man City, I can’t see them going on an amazing run like they have the last few years. They’ve got to play each other twice as well so there will be points dropped there.

“You have to include Manchester United, they’re second in the league! If you include Man City you’ve got to include United. There’s a lot of football to be played."
