Met Office say prepare for 'shock to the system' as Arctic blast hits UK bringing snow

Parts of the UK could see some snow this week as an Arctic blast hits the country. The Met Office has said temperatures will drop this week with a chance of patchy frost and even snow over the next few days.

The forecaster added that on Wednesday there will be blustery showers, with a small risk of thunder and hail - particularly in the north. Snow and sleet may also fall in mountainous regions of Scotland.

Clare Nasir, Met Office meteorologist, said: “Yesterday (Tuesday), there were severe gales across the north east of Scotland and some persistent rain, all courtesy of this area of low pressure.

“And this low, the position of it, continues to affect our weather through the next few days.”

She said this means “showers, some sunshine and a cold wind”. The wet weather will continue overnight and become more frequent across northern and western areas of the UK.

Frost might be seen in some areas in the morning as temperatures drop.

Ms Nasir said: “Winds won’t be as blustery across in-land areas, showers particularly along the coastline, they may develop in land, but there will be some drier interludes and a mix of cloud and sunshine yet again, temperatures 14C or 15C in the south.

Met Office spokesman Johnathan Vautrey said temperatures for most of the week will be 4-6C below average - with Friday morning expected to be coldest.

According to the latest forecast parts of Greater Manchester could see lows of 3c overnight on Thursday and into Friday morning.

Mr Vautrey said: “We could see some patchy frost developing in rural areas across all nations of the UK, particularly Scotland.
