Manchester theatre issues statement as it postpones upcoming shows after cancelling performance

A Manchester theatre has been forced to postpone its upcoming shows after it cancelled a performance last night.

The Royal Exchange Theatre began its run of a modern adaptation of William Shakespeare’s A Midsummer Night’s Dream on Friday (September 6) which sees the classic play updated and immersed with references to Manchester's contemporary rave scene.

But, just days into its run, the theatre was forced to cancel the Tuesday night (September 11) performance due to ‘technical reasons’. In an email issued to ticket holders just hours before the show had been due to take place, the city centre theatre said it was ‘incredibly sorry for the short notice’.

The email also offered those with tickets the chance to book onto future performances and thanked people for their ‘understanding’ of the situation.

In a further update today, the theatre has now said it has postponed the show due to a series of ‘on-going’ issues. Performances scheduled for the rest of this week have now been taken off the Royal Exchange website, with the first available booking being for the show on Monday.

In a statement, the theatre told the Manchester Evening News: “We are postponing the show for on-going technical reasons which we are currently working through.”

No further details have been shared regarding the scope of the technical issues. It has also not yet been made clear how long the postponement is expected to last.

The modern rendition of the historic play, which is directed by Stef O’Driscoll, features an esteemed cast including Two Pints of Lager… star Natalie Casey, as well as Sam Black, Harry Egan and Alicia Forde.
