A yellow weather warning for rain has been issued for parts of Greater Manchester for New Year's Eve and New Year's Day. The Met Office has warned torrential downpours could lead to flooding and disruption to travel.

The warning comes into force at 6pm today (December 31 and runs until 6am tomorrow and covers parts of Manchester, Tameside, Oldham, Bury, Rochdale and Bolton. It reads: "Frequent heavy showers may lead to some flooding and disruption to travel.

"What to expect: flooding of a few homes and businesses is possible; spray and flooding on roads probably making journey times longer and bus and train services probably affected with journey times taking longer."

The Met Office forecast for New Year's Eve night says: "A showery evening and start to the new year with showers continuing overnight, merging into longer spells of rain in places. Windy with coastal gales possible in the south. Minimum temperature 4 °C."

The New Year will begin with 'rather windy and showery' conditions, forecasters say. "But the winds will slowly ease and whilst scattered showers will continue, most places will see some sunshine through the afternoon," they add.

Maximum temperatures on New Year's Day in Manchester are 7C.
