Met Office confirms Storm Babet will arrive THIS WEEK as weather warning issued

A weather warning has been issued for parts of Greater Manchester ahead of the arrival of Storm Babet. The Met Office confirmed the second named storm of the season today (October 16) ahead of its arrival later in the week.

Forecasters say the storm will bring 'impactful' heavy rain and strong winds to the UK from Wednesday. The Met Office says there is a chance of 'extremely heavy rain' which could cause flooding and disruption across the country.

Strong, south-easterly gusts of wind could 'exacerbate' the impacts of heavy rain, the Met Office adds. A yellow weather warning has now been issued for rain across much of northern and eastern England.

The warning is in place from 9pm on Wednesday until 6am on Saturday. It covers some eastern areas of Greater Manchester, including Saddleworth and parts of Tameside.

The rest of the region, including Manchester, is not covered by the warning. However, the Met Office is still predicting Manchester will be hit by sudden, heavy rain late on Wednesday night.

Forecasters currently predict a 70% chance of heavy rain in the city at 10pm that night, with strong gusts from the afternoon. That rain is currently expected to last until around 7am on Thursday morning.

Further announcements could still be made by the Met Office before the storm's arrival.
