Merson picks ‘absolute bargain’ as best Premier League signing of the summer so far

Paul Merson reckons that Tottenham’s acquisition of Yves Bissouma is the best signing by a Premier League club so far this summer.

Spurs confirmed the addition of Bissouma earlier this month for £25m. The Malian midfielder joined from Brighton after a superb spell with the south coast outfit.

All the Premier League completed summer transfers in one place

He was linked with a number of top clubs including Liverpool, Manchester United and Arsenal, however, Fabio Paratici was able to bring the player to north London with little competition in the end.

The 25-year-old had one year left on his contract so was picked up for a very respectable price.

Having emerged as one of the best defensive midfielders in the Premier League, former Arsenal midfielder Merson has described the signing of Bissouma as “an unbelievable coup”.

“This is an unbelievable coup for Spurs as Yves Bissouma could have played for any of the other top-six sides in the Premier League,” Merson told Sportskeeda. “He’s better than Scott McTominay and Fred, I have no idea why Manchester United didn’t go in for him!

“He runs the show, affects football matches right from the get-go and is an all-round midfielder with quite a bit of Premier League experience under his belt. No disrespect to Spurs, but why didn’t some of the other teams look at him and consider making a move for him? I look at Liverpool’s midfield and feel he could play for them, especially if someone like Fabinho we’re to get injured.

“£25million in this day and age – it’s nothing. Spurs have nabbed an absolute bargain with Bissouma and he, in my opinion, has been the signing of the summer in the Premier League so far.”
