Merciless Jon Rahm gets golf fans talking as new LIV signing wastes no time cutting PGA ties

Golf fans reckon Jon Rahm has wasted no time cutting ties with the PGA - within 24 hours of switching to LIV.

Rahm joined the Saudi breakaway LIV in a mega £475m deal that will make him one of the highest-paid golfers in history. The Masters champion becomes their latest acquisition from the PGA, following in the footsteps of his pals Sergio Garcia and Phil Mickelson, as well as the likes of Dustin Johnson, Brooks Koepka, Bryson DeChambeau and Cam Smith. But there's an argument Rahm, currently ranked third in the world, is their biggest name signing to date.

The switch was only officially announced on Thursday night after Rahm let it slip in an interview that he is defecting. The Spaniard is set to head up his own team on arriving at the Saudi PIF-backed circuit. And fans spotted a clue on social media that he's wasted no time nailing his new colours to the mast.

The move was announced on Thursday but eagle-eyed punters clocked that his old handle on X, @JohnrahmPGA had been ditched for a new one within MINUTES of LIV officially announcing his signing. The league announced it at 11.58pm UK time on Thursday and a tweet sent by bunkered editor Michael McEwan - less than 24 hours later - showed that it had already been changed to '@JohnRahmOfficial.'

Despite the controversy, Rahm says he is on 'the side of golf' and couldn't say no to an offer that changed his family's life.

He said: "I love the game of golf and I'm on the side of golf, right, when I'm ever going to discussions. I want golf to succeed. And the second, that at the end of the day, a man is going to make a decision of what's best for him and his family, right? It's that simple."
