Megan Rapinoe praises "incredible" crowd at Wembley after booing controversy

Football star Megan Rapinoe has praised the “amazing” crowd at Wembley during a friendly match between the US and England.

The 37-year-old played 83 minutes as her side lost 2-1 to the Lionesses in front of a crowd of 76,893.

Lauren Hemp and Georgia Stanway were on the scoresheet for England, cancelling out Sophia Smith’s goal for the US in the 28th minute.

The encounter had its fair share of controversy, with VAR ruling out Trinity Rodman’s equaliser for offside and denying the US a late penalty.

Fans were also left divided after Rapinoe was booed as she left the pitch to be replaced by 17-year-old Alyssa Thompson.

But the 2019 Ballon d’Or winner did not seem fazed by the jeering, later praising the “unbelievable” experience.

“It was unbelievable,” Rapinoe said. “Obviously we were disappointed about the result, but everything else was just incredible.

“Just to think what it took on so many different levels, so many years, to even have a friendly like this. It was amazing.

“To see the English players be able to play here, to get that kind of reception. To know that they have, not only 76,000, but basically the whole country behind them. It was exactly what they deserved.

“It was amazing to be a part of, and happy that it was the US national team that played them.”

Well done, @wembleystadium
