Media react to Callum Wilson’s ‘dreadful’ injury blow

Newcastle United have suffered an injury blow ahead of Tuesday’s Premier League meeting with Everton – Callum Wilson has been ruled out for the remainder of the season.

The 29-year-old was recovering from a calf injury but has suffered a setback which could keep him sidelined until the final few games of the campaign. Fans on social media lamented the news and notable media figures conceded it was ‘dreadful’ for the Magpies.

Ben Dinnery of Premier Injuries described the injury as ‘bad news’, as Wilson had just come off crutches before the setback. Andrew Musgrove of Chronicle Live called the news a ‘big blow’ and said it overshadowed Dan Ashworth’s arrival at technical director.

Chris Waugh of The Athletic said Wilson’s absence is a ‘significant blow’ because Newcastle didn’t sign another striker in January like Eddie Howe wanted. Lee Ryder of Chronicle Live also noted how Newcastle’s failure to sign a centre-forward has come back to bite them.

Simon Bird of the Daily Mirror said was a ‘dreadful update’ to give. Newcastle are 19th in the Premier League and 17th in the table for goals (21), so it could harm their hopes of survival not having their top scorer available – the 29-year-old has six goals from 15 games this season.
