'Maybe it's a mistake' Pep Guardiola explains Man City transfer thinking and drops January hint

Pep Guardiola said Manchester City were not convinced enough by any options in the transfer market to make any more additions to the squad.

City sold Julian Alvarez for a club record £81.5m and have not replaced him despite looking at a number of options. FC Copenhagen's Orri Oskarsson and Celtic's Kyogo Furuhashi were both looked at in the weeks after, and Ilkay Gundogan arrived on a free transfer late in the window.

Gundogan was one of four players named by Guardiola on Friday as an option to cover for Erling Haaland in Alvarez's absence and the manager is banking on his versatile players to fill in as they are required. There was also a suggestion they could enter the winter transfer market if they get injuries, although City are happy with their business.

"I'm happy with the squad. If we have many injuries it will be a problem but hopefully Oscar will be back in two or three months, Phil (Foden), (James) McAtee, Gundogan and Bernardo can play in that position. They are different types of players to Erling.

"Maybe it's a mistake but I like to work with not a long squad. I don't like to leave a lot of players without playing for a long time. When you have a long squad with no injuries, it is 10 months without playing and I don't like it.

"When everybody is involved with a chance to play, the performance of the team is always better. That's why I prefer [that way]. I know the group, I know how incredible serious and committed they are.
