Max Verstappen finding out he's won the F1 world title was so awkward and anti-climactic

You would think that becoming a two-time world champion in F1 would be one of the greatest moments of Max Verstappen’s career.

But unfortunately, it was a bit of an anti-climax for the Dutchman as he found out during his teammate Sergio Perez’s interview, with no one truly knowing what was going on and what the ending to the race meant in terms of the Drivers’ Championship.

The Red Bull driver won a chaotic rain-shortened Japanese Grand Prix, but it wasn’t clear that he had got over the line in terms of the world title.

Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc made a mistake on the final lap of the race which earned him a five-second penalty.

The penalty meant that he finished third in the race and only second place would have been good enough to keep his slim title chances alive. Therefore, Verstappen was officially crowned champion.

It all meant that Verstappen now has an unassailable lead in the standings and he is now a back-to-back world champion with races left to spare.

Perez was being interviewed post-race with his teammate Verstappen stood to the side after already speaking, but the chat with the Mexican had to be interrupted to let the 25-year-old know the news.

Johnny Herbert said: “Come back in, Charles got a five-second penalty there after the little race he had with Sergio, [you’re] world champion.”

In response, Verstappen said: “Well, what can I say? Incredible for us, very special to do it here.”
