Mauricio Pochettino wish highlights key issue at Manchester United

Manchester United are well aware of just how important their next managerial appointment will be, but they run the risk of making the same mistakes again if player power continues to dictate proceedings at Old Trafford.

The Manchester Evening News reported last month, United are determined to hire their next permanent manager before the end of the season and last night it was revealed that Mauricio Pochettino is the most popular pick among the players.

Pochettino has long held an interest in managing United one day and would be open to a return to the Premier League immediately if an approach was made, though that would rely on Paris Saint-Germain playing along too.

United explored the possibility of releasing the Argentine from his PSG contract in November, but the Qatari-owned club are believed to have 'played hardball'. Things could take a drastic turn if the Ligue 1 side are dumped out of the Champions League by Real Madrid next month, mind.

A mutual interest in Pochettino is understandable given the work he oversaw at Tottenham, but United would be making a mistake by hiring the Argentine in an effort to appease a group of players who already have too much power in their hands.

United players are understood to be impressed by Pochettino's man-management skills, style of play and track record of developing individuals in the Premier League, but news of player interest in the PSG boss has understandably sparked outrage amongst many fans on social media.
