Matt Whitley makes decision on future as Super League clubs line up for Catalans Dragons ace

Catalans Dragons have retained the services of Matt Whitley. Rugby League Live understands the back-rower is set to put pen to paper on a new deal that will keep him in France for the foreseeable future.

Whitley had commanded extensive interest across Super League, with his contract set to expire at the end of the season. At least three UK clubs are thought to have made legitimate offers to secure him for 2023.

But after careful consideration, Whitely has decided to remain a Dragon, which will take him into a fifth season in Perpignan. The 26-year-old, who has represented England Knights during his career, has been a consistent performer ever since joining the club from relegated Widnes Vikings in 2018.

He has now made 137 Super League appearances in total scoring 37 tries in the process. The Dragons are nicely building for 2023 having announced the arrival of Siosiua Taukeiaho on Tuesday. The Tonga international has signed a two-year contract with the option of a third. Wakefield Trinity winger Tom Johnstone has also signed for the club, thought this has yet to be announced.

Going the other way, Dean Whare is expected to depart after being offered to clubs while both Sam Kasiano and Gil Dudson are joining Warrington Wolves, with their departures already announced.
