Mateo Mejía signs new Manchester United deal after being named on retained list

Mateo Mejía has signed a new Manchester United deal after being named on the retained list earlier this month.

The 20-year-old was technically out of contract at the end of June, but has signed new terms to keep him at the club going forward.

Mejia was named on United's retained list, but the club was always confident of keeping him beyond his contract expiring at the end of this week.

The Manchester Evening News understands Mejia could also be loaned out next season as he looks to make the transition from youth football to the senior game.

The Colombian youngster joined the club from Spanish side Real Zaragoza in 2019 and has impressed at youth level despite his bad luck with injuries.

He experienced a decent season for the U21 side, scoring two goals and assisting another four during 15 appearances in the Premier League 2.

Mejia was one of 32 academy players who joined first-team training last season and has been able to catch the eye of United coaches first-hand.

He could be given a chance when a youthful United side faces Wrexham in pre-season this summer.
