Match reaction from Gillingham boss Gareth Ainsworth after 1-1 draw with Northampton Town at Priestfield

Gillingham manager Gareth Ainsworth believes his side are close to clicking into gear after insisting they were the better team in their draw with Northampton Town.

The Gills are still waiting for their first win of the League Two season after being held at home. The match at Priestfield ended 1-1.

Conor McManus gave Gillingham the perfect start with a goal after just seven minutes on his full Football League debut. But Northampton hit back through Logan Briggs before half-time and neither side could find a winner after the break.

Ainsworth was pleased with what he saw from his side – but knows they need to start taking their chances.

He said: “I'm proud of the performance. I knew we were the better team and I think we've created the better chances, the more shots on goal.

“As always, as the last three games have shown, it's just sticking it in the net and it will happen.

“We're working on that hard. I think we're creating really well, keeping the ball a little bit, trying to penetrate teams with our play. I'm really happy with where we are at the moment.”

The Gills could hardly have wished for a better beginning when McManus rose to head home Nick Freeman's cross.

It was a dream full league debut for the Irishman, who became the first Gillingham player to score in the league this season.

Ainsworth said: “What a start for our Irishman, Conor McManus. He makes his full debut in the Football League and scores a goal – not many do that.

“Congratulations to Conor. He was in the right place and he took the header really well.

“Great cross from the other wing-back, Nick Freeman. It was something we've worked on, but also it's something that needed finishing.
