Massive changes in store for busy Greater Manchester A road

'Crucial improvements' are to be made to the busy A34 corridor. Almost £3m has been promised to sort the stretch.

The work, aimed to reduce congestion and improve safety, will be carried out on the busy main road between Cheadle and Handforth. They are set to improve connectivity, with new cycle tracks, pathways, and controlled crossings implemented, and also shorten local journey times, including to Manchester Airport.

The stretch, between the M60 and A555, was regularly 'plagued by traffic bottlenecks', particularly at peak times. Works on the A34 Corridor Improvement Scheme, costing £33.6m in total, are to be completed by Spring 2027.

The improvements are also expected to generate more than £72m in direct economic benefits for Greater Manchester and Stockport, as well as providing opportunities for more sustainable travel in and around the area.

The A34 improvements follow £1.2bn announced earlier this month to repair roads across the north west.

Roads Minister Guy Opperman said: “We have invested nearly £34m into improving the A34, easing congestion and improving safety for local drivers while helping to improve connections to grow the economy across Stockport, Greater Manchester and the north west.

“It was great to visit Cheadle today and hear first-hand how our funding will help improve one of Stockport’s key roads as we work hard to keep this country moving and back drivers.”
