Mary Earps injury update given as Manchester United goalkeeper withdraws from England squad

England boss Sarina Wiegman has offered a promising update on Mary Earps after the Manchester United goalkeeper picked up an injury against France on Friday.

Earps was forced off just seven minutes into the Lionesses' EURO 2025 qualifier at St James' Park and it was confirmed on Sunday she has had to withdraw from the squad with a hip problem. As such, she will not be available to feature for England when they face France again in Saint-Etienne on Tuesday but Wiegman does not expect the shot-stopper's injury to keep her sidelined for long.

"She can’t play tomorrow," Wiegman said in her pre-match press conference. "She left as you know but it’s not too big of an injury so we expect her to be back next camp."

It is good news for England, who have plenty of work to do if they are to qualify automatically for next summer's Euros. After their clash with group leaders France at the Stade Geoffroy-Guichard, the Lionesses - who are currently third in their four-team group - have two further games against Sweden and the Republic of Ireland in July.

Only the top two teams in each group automatically progress to the tournament finals, meaning England can ill afford any more slip-ups in their qualifying campaign. Earps was replaced on Friday night by Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton, who also started against Ireland in April.
