Martin Lewis tells British Gas customers 'you may want to fix' as 'cheap' energy deal launched

Martin Lewis has told British Gas customers that they may want to consider moving to a new fixed energy tariff. The energy firm has just launched a new fixed deal, which the money saving expert said was "cheaper than the other fixes out there".

On top of that, the tariff is available to new customers as well, which means people who decide to switch to British Gas from another firm could still get the deal.

Speaking on Tuesday night's edition of ITV's The Martin Lewis Money Show, the presenter told viewers that there were now two new deals on the market that are worth checking out.

He explained that current predictions suggest that people who are on the Ofgem price cap will pay "on average one per cent more than the current price cap" over the next year. The current cap is £1,834, which will rise to £1,928 from January. Ofgem sets a new cap every three months.

The energy price cap sets a limit on the maximum amount suppliers can charge households in England, Wales and Scotland for each unit of gas and electricity. However, some firms offer fixed tariffs, where your rate stays the same for the length of your contract. A fixed tariff usually lasts 12 months, although you can sometimes fix for longer.

Explaining whether it's worth fixing or not, Mr Lewis said: "So, if you could get a fix at that [one per cent more than the current price cap] or less, it looks good right now. I can't promise it will in hindsight but it looks good right now."
