Marquinhos: Arsenal star's electric debut display vs Zurich
Arsenal kicked-off their Europa League campaign by overcoming a stubborn Zurich side in a 2-1 away victory.
It was perhaps a much tougher test than the Gunners bargained for, with the home team threatening regularly and causing Arsenal problems.
But ultimately, Mikel Arteta’s side’s added quality was the difference and it meant that the Premier League team returned to London with a solid three points.
For any Arsenal fans that watched the game, the real take-home point they’ll be shouting about around the office this morning is the performance of their new signing Marquinhos.
The Brazilian, who became Arsenal’s first summer signing after joining in a deal worth a reported £3 million from Sao Paolo, was absolutely electric on the night.
It was his full-debut for the club yet looked like the star of the show, scoring a beautifully timed finish to open the scoring before providing a sublime assist for Eddie Nketiah to head home and win the game.
It really was magnificent from the 19-year-old and based off that display, it looks like Arsenal could have another lethal Brazilian weapon to add to their already frightening attacking roster.
Operating on the right of a front-three, Marquinhos displayed a clear tendency to cut back in onto his left foot and pick out a runner – it was all very Dejan Kulusevski-esque from the lad, who frequently provided inch-perfect deliveries throughout the 90 minutes.
But that’s not to say he was one dimensional, not by a long chalk.
His goal was expertly converted with his right foot, latching onto a cross and driving the ball into the top left corner.
Whilst his inclination to commit defenders and pull off FIFA Street style tricks was befitting of any promising Brazilian baller.
