Marks & Spencer full list of store closures as more branches to shut

Marks & Spencer is axing more stores as part of a large-scale update to its business structure. The company had plans to permanently shut 110 shops, which they previously announced but the specific locations were not disclosed.

M&S says it wants to concentrate more on its food-focused branches and trim down their "full line" stores that stock home and clothing items.

During October 2022, the supermarket stated its goal to downsize the number of "full line" outlets from 247 to 180 by the year 2028. However, it's also planning to launch an additional 104 Simply Food shops.

If this strategy works, it will boost the quantity of Simply Food sites owned by M&S from 316 up to 420. The company revealed the allocation of £480million to their "store rotation programme". This project is set to create approximately 3,400 jobs, reports the Mirror.

November 2023 was reported as Marks and Spencer's largest single month for store openings with nine new or revamped shops launched.

M&S Chief Executive, Stuart Machin, stated that the business is dedicated to "making sure we have the right stores, in the right place, with the right space". He further explained: "We're aiming to rotate... to 180 higher quality, higher productivity full line stores that sell our full clothing, home and food offer whilst also opening over 100 bigger, better food sites."
