Mark Keenan: Ireland targeting 'upset' win over Croatia

Mark Keenan says Ireland "aren't here to make up the numbers" as they prepare for Thursday’s FIBA EuroBasket 2025 Pre-Qualifier against Croatia.

Ireland take on the world No 25 in Opatija (tip-off 7pm Irish time) in the opening game of the third round of pre-qualifying, with team captain John Carroll poised to return after a year-long absence with an ACL injury.

Ireland trained at the venue in Opatija on Tuesday morning, having played two behind-closed-doors games against Switzerland in Geneva as part of their preparations. Despite suffering narrow losses in both matches (85-76 and 77-76), head coach Keenan said they went a long way to ensuring Ireland are ready for the challenge of facing Croatia.

"We want to compete and get after that victory," said Keenan. "We know a win for us is an upset, but this is sport and who knows what can happen.

"We’ve other games coming up quickly but right now this is all about Thursday. All about Croatia and obtaining the best result we can get."

Keenan welcomed two potential international debutants into the squad - 21-year-old Sam Alajiki, who graduates from the U20 programme, while 7ft centre Neal Quinn enters the fold after impressing with the University of Richmond in the USA.

Killester’s Paul Dick and Matt Treacy from Moy Tolka Rovers are also in line for a first appearance in FIBA EuroBasket qualification following strong domestic campaigns, while captain Carroll makes a welcome return.

"We haven't made him team captain for no reason," said Keenan of Carroll. "John is hugely important for us, so it’s great to get him back after 12 months away and he’s coming on with every session."
