Mark Hughes tempts Ciarán Kelly to Bradford as Bohs lose defender

Bohemians have been dealt a blow ahead of the 2023 League of Ireland season as defender Ciarán Kelly has signed for League 2 side Bradford City.

Kelly was a free agent and was considering his options at home and abroad.

He has been convinced by Mark Hughes to move to England with the Bantams currently in the play-off picture in seventh place as well as a possible automatic promotion push if they can break into the top three.

New boss Declan Devine has added the likes of James Akintunde, Paddy Kirk and Adam McDonnell to his squad so far, as well as the return of Keith Buckley, but once again the Gypsies have lost one of their stalwarts in the off-season.

Liam Burt has also joined rivals Shamrock Rovers.

Kelly, 24, began his professional career at St Patrick's Athletic in 2015, where he returned after a spell with Drogheda United, before moving to Bohs in 2020.

He featured 74 times in total for Bohs, including 34 of their 36 league games this calendar year.

Kelly said: "It feels great to be here. This is a massive club, and I am determined to play a part in its history.

"I am a defender who likes to play out from the back, but am not afraid of putting in a hard challenge when I need to as well.

"I have been in Ireland for a number of years now, and had success at the clubs I have been at. I have played in finals and big games in Europe, but have come here to stamp my authority on the English leagues and be a part of something special.

"I always want to challenge myself, and see this as the next step up in my career. Hopefully, I can achieve great things here.
