Player-boss Ben Greenhalgh can see pros and cons with Margate’s opening-day Isthmian South East opponents having already started their campaign ahead of their league meeting this Saturday.

Gate, last term’s play-off semi-finalists, will welcome newly-promoted Jersey Bulls to Hartsdown Park (1pm) before Tuesday’s derby at Sittingbourne.

While Margate ended pre-season with a 3-1 defeat at Dover last weekend, Elliot Powell’s team thrashed Erith & Belvedere 5-0 in the FA Cup extra preliminary round.

Bulls won promotion to the eighth tier of English football for the first time in their history through the play-offs last season after a three-point deduction for fielding a suspended player dropped them to second and into the Combined Counties League Premier South play-offs.

Greenhalgh said: “The good thing for us is you always want a home game as your first game of the season, even though it probably does put a bit more pressure on you.

“Jersey are coming up after all of the craziness they had last season where, all of a sudden, they weren’t going to have the chance to win the league. I expect them to put up a bit of a fight.

“Playing against a team that has already started their season, it’s an advantage and a disadvantage. They have already played a game and won that 5-0 so we might be a bit fresher than them but they have already beaten a pretty strong Southern Counties East League Premier Division side.

“I’m sure they will be putting their all into, at least, making sure they stay in the division this year. I’m sure playing them away is going to be difficult - you don’t usually fly to games - but they’ll be more used to the travelling than everyone else.
