Marcus Rashford recovering from two injuries ahead of Manchester United return

Manchester United forward Marcus Rashford has been nursing bruised ribs and a bruised heel during his recent lay-off.

The 26-year-old has missed the past four games since he hobbled off against Coventry City in the FA Cup semi-final on April 21. Rashford is confident the bruising on his ribs has healed but it is understood he is still suffering soreness on his heel.

United manager Erik ten Hag indicated Rashford would return to the matchday squad against Arsenal last week but the winger sat out the 1-0 defeat.

Rashford did some ball work in training last week but did not complete two full sessions and his preference would be to return for the final Premier League game of the season away to Brighton on Sunday.

Ten Hag is expected to give an update on Rashford's fitness later this morning at his pre-match press conference for the visit of Newcastle on Wednesday night.

Rashford's form suffered when he played on through injury under former permanent United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. Rashford required surgery on a shoulder problem in July 2021.

The England international also briefly played with a double stress fracture of his back in January 2020 until he aggravated the injury.

United take on Manchester City in the FA Cup final a week on Saturday and England manager Gareth Southgate announces his 26-man squad for the European Championship at 2pm next Tuesday.

Rashford came on for 15 minutes in the friendly defeat to Brazil at Wembley in March and was an unused substitute in the 2-2 draw with Belgium three days later.
