Marcus Rashford might have to adapt to a new Manchester United role

When it came to the art of scoring goals last season, Manchester United often found themselves praying that Marcus Rashford would come up with the goods.

After a forgettable 2021/22 campaign which featured a paltry five goals, Rashford set the world alight last season, becoming the first United player in a decade to plunder 30 in a single campaign. He was at the forefront of United's resurrection under Erik ten Hag and, at times, was one of the best-performing players on the planet.

Seven appearances into this season, however, Rashford, just like United, is taking time to warm up. He has scored just one goal in his first seven appearances, firing blanks in each of his last three.

After starting the opening two Premier League games of the season as an outright centre-forward, Rashford was redeployed to the left wing for the tussles with Nottingham Forest and Arsenal. He claimed an assist and a goal in those two outings, providing yet more evidence that he is at his best when cutting in from the flank.

He has frequently cited the left wing as his favourite position and his exploits last season highlighted why. He scored the bulk of his goals last season when starting out wide.

Speaking during the summer, the England international said: "[I prefer] left-wing, although I feel like [at] centre-forward you've got less distance to cover to score simple goals.

"When you're on the left wing, if you're late working the back post sometimes it's a 30-yard sprint. And if the striker pulls to the back and you've got to go across the front then it's another 15 yards."
