Manchester United youngster's future has been decided by Erik ten Hag's first signing

Erik ten Hag is set to use the upcoming pre-season tour as an opportunity to cast his eye over the most promising young players at his disposal.

The Manchester United manager will hope to have a few new faces to show off when his side fly to the US next month, and they could be joined by a few fresh-faced ones as well.

It will be an opportunity for United youngsters and returning loanees to catch the eye of the first-team boss, but for some, it might not be enough to change their plans for next season.

Amad and Alvaro Fernandez will both be given a chance in the senior set-up after their impressive loan spells away from the club, in which they both won Young Player of the Year at their respective clubs.

The Ivorian winger was a catalyst behind Sunderland's resurgence in the second half of the season and almost did enough to help his side earn a return to the Premier League.

It wasn't quite as successful for the Spanish full-back though, as Preston fell short of the play-off places after a disastrous end to the campaign that saw them winless in their last five matches.

Even though the season didn't end in team success for Fernandez, it was certainly one that offered him priceless experience and gave him his first proper taste of men's football.

United believe that a season in the Championship will serve him well going forward, and the 20-year-old will return this summer a more mature player with a greater understanding of his responsibilities as a wing-back.

Yet, no matter how well he might do during the pre-season schedule, he faces the unenviable feat of ever disrupting the current hierarchy given the competition for places.
