Manchester United, Wrexham and Wales legend Mickey Thomas smashes charity Snowdon challenge

Manchester United, Wrexham and Wales legend Mickey Thomas completed his walk to the summit of Wales' highest mountain on the weekend and raised thousands of pounds for charity in the process. Thomas, who overcame cancer a few years ago, has raised over £12,000 for the Upper GI Surgery Unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital.

67-year-old Mickey, who hails from Mochdre, was joined by family and friends for the walk up Yr Wyddfa/Snowdon, as well as a TV crew from MUTV, the Manchester United TV channel. He was also joined by former Wrexham AFC and Wales striker Neil Roberts and Dr Andrew Baker - the surgeon who saved his life.

The much-loved former player, who also represented Chelsea and Everton during an impressive career, was diagnosed with oesophageal cancer in 2019. His symptoms included having difficulty swallowing and he had lost weight. His tumour was so big that his ribs had to be broken to deal with it, but luckily Dr Baker managed to remove all of it and Mickey made a full recovery.

Another special guest joining Mickey and co on the walk was young Madi Roberts from Llangefni. Madi, daughter of former Llangefni Town FC manager Chris Roberts, achieved internet fame recently - singing a song about her favourite Wrexham player Paul Mullin before the club's match at Wembley.

The aim of the walk was to raise over £20,000 for the unit at Wrexham Maelor Hospital and they are well on the way to achieving that target with over £12,000 raised already.

Before the walk, Thomas said: "I’m incredibly lucky to be here because the stats aren’t exactly great for what I had, only about 30% make it and I had such a big tumour they couldn’t even get the camera down me.

"But the care I received at Wrexham Maelor was incredible and Dr Baker
