Manchester United winners and losers from Premier League win against Wolves

Manchester United got their latest Premier League season up and running with victory against Wolves on Monday night, but the curtain raiser at Old Trafford was not without its controversy - or fortune.

Raphael Varane won it for United with a header after 76 minutes. Wolves, though, were the better side for large spells and carved out several chances and really ought to have been awarded a penalty.

However, in the end it was United who weathered that storm to notch three points on the board. Here are five winners and losers from their much-talked-about opener.

Raphael Varane: With defensive partner Lisandro Martinez not at his best - before then suffering an injury scare - Varane did his utmost to keep plucky Wolves at bay. His winner ensured United weathered the storm and got their season under way with a win. Will be paramount this campaign.

Aaron Wan-Bissaka: A huge night for the right-back. It was nip and tuck who might start in that position, but his defensive display and match-winning assist means Diogo Dalot will have work to do to grab back the shirt. Wan-Bissaka has to be given so much credit for turning things around at Old Trafford in recent months.

Rasmus Hojlund: Signed for £72m including add-ons, United will be desperate to get their striker back after he recovers from injury. Although the Dane will take time to settle, his presence should ease the burden on Marcus Rashford and allow the Academy graduate to return to his favoured left-hand position.
