Manchester United get Rasmus Hojlund injury boost amid Luke Shaw blow

Manchester United manager Erik ten Hag has confirmed Luke Shaw could be sidelined for longer than the club indicated.

United said Shaw would be out "for a number of weeks" with a muscular injury but the Manchester Evening News reported that the left-back could be sidelined for months.

Ten Hag also confirmed Tyrell Malacia is out for "a few more weeks", which could extend his lay-off to two months. The Dutch left-back returned to pre-season training injured.

In more positive news for United, Rasmus Hojlund has started team training and could be in contention to make his debut against Arsenal next Sunday.

Hojlund, who completed his £72million move from Atalanta three weeks ago, has been recovering from a stress fracture of the back.

Mason Mount is out until next month while Kobbie Mainoo and Tom Heaton also remain unavailable. It is unclear if Harry Maguire will recover in time for the Premier League visit of Nottingham Forest on Saturday.

"Not for tomorrow. (He's) near," Ten Hag said. "Today, for the first time, he came into team training so next week we expect him to do a full week of team trainings so he is near to the squad.

"We can't [disclose their injuries], it's personal these days, they will be for some period absent. Luke will be longer than Mason. Malacia will also take a few weeks before he will be back."

Diogo Dalot is set to move to left-back in the absence of Shaw and Malacia, as well as Brandon Williams, who joined Ipswich Town on loan on Thursday.

United are in the market for a left-back to offset Shaw's absence but Ten Hag is publicly convinced they have solutions in the squad.
