Manchester United warned over Liverpool factor in possible Brendan Rodgers appointment

Manchester United have been warned over appointing Brendan Rodgers as their permanent manager.

Currently with fellow Premier League side Leicester City, the Northern Irishman has been mooted as one potential successor to Ole Gunnar Solskjaer, with Ralf Rangnick holding that position on an interim basis.

As things stand, the German will move upstairs into an advisory role at the end of the season.

Beyond that, Mauricio Pochettino and Ajax coach Erik ten Hag are seen as the two leading candidates to step into the Old Trafford dugout, but Rodgers has also built up a notable CV at Swansea City, Celtic and the Foxes and has been touted for the role.

However, due to Rodgers' connections with Liverpool — having served as their manager between 2012 and 2015 — United have been urged against his appointment, by ex United academy player Richie Wellens .

Wellens himself has previously managed Oldham, Swindon, Class of 92-owned Salford and Doncaster Rovers.

He said: "Brendan has been linked with Manchester United recently. He would definitely be a candidate.

"I think it's a good fit, but he has been at Liverpool and that is really tough. United are their biggest rivals.

Who should United appoint as manager? Have your say in the comments section below.

"You have seen Rafa Benitez, who has been hugely successful, but he was under pressure straightaway to win at Everton. Brendan is a very good coach, but having been Liverpool manager in the past is a potential problem.

"Someone like Mauricio Pochettino or Luis Enrique would be better for United as they don't have that baggage.

"But in terms of the top four or five clubs, if any jobs come up, Brendan would be considered."
