Manchester United "trying hard" to sell defender to finance signings

Manchester United are stepping up their efforts to sell Victor Lindelof this summer.

Lindelof, who turns 30 next week, is out of contract next year and this is the last transfer window United can realistically sell the centre back.

A source said United are "trying hard" to sell the Sweden captain, who joined the club from Benfica in 2017. United have already agreed to sell centre back Willy Kambwala to Villarreal.

Lindelof made 28 appearances last season - his lowest in a single United campaign - due to two lengthy lay-offs through injury.

United are open to signing three centre backs and had an offer of around €65million accepted for Lille defender Leny Yoro earlier this week. Everton have rejected two bids from United for Jarrad Branthwaite while the club have agreed personal terms with Bayern Munich defender Matthijs de Ligt.

Jonny Evans signed a new one-year deal on Friday but United manager Erik ten Hag is set to have a shortage of senior centre halves for United's first pre-season friendly against Rosenborg on Monday.

Raphael Varane was released last month and Lisandro Martinez is due to start in the Copa America final for Argentina on Sunday. Harry Maguire has returned to pre-season training after recovering from a muscular injury and Lindelof was among the senior squad members to report for pre-season on Monday.

The majority of United players who are out of contract next year have been deemed sellable or a must-sell. United are in advanced discussions to sell Mason Greenwood to Marseille while Aaron Wan-Bissaka is available for transfer.
