Regardless, the result was the perfect response from United after the Manchester derby defeat. Ronaldo scored a hat-trick in the match after being absent last weekend and that was also the ideal response from the player on an individual basis.

The five-time Ballon d’Or winner brought up another milestone in his career as he broke the FIFA record for the most goals in competitive matches in football history. Having equalled Josef Bican’s record of 805 earlier on against Tottenham, Ronaldo then went on to surpass the mark with his 806th competitive goal.

Having been a doubt to face Spurs in the week leading up to the game, Ronaldo wasted no time in marking his return to the side in spectacular fashion. He gave United the lead with a brilliant early strike, thundering the ball into the top corner from 25 yards.
