Manchester United transfer news mocked by darts legend Michael van Gerwen

A new era has dawned at Manchester United with Erik ten Hag jetting in to take his place in the managerial hot seat.

The role has proven to be somewhat of a cursed chalice since the departure of Sir Alex Ferguson, with the club lurching from one disappointment to the next since the legendary Scot retired.

This time last year, it was Ole Gunnar Solskjaer who was hard at work preparing for the upcoming Premier League season and it looked, on the surface, like he was making all the right moves.

Jadon Sancho was signed, with Rafael Varane and his wealth of experience also joining.

However, the coup of the summer came when they managed to convince Cristiano Ronaldo to spurn the advances of Manchester City and instead rejoin the ranks at Old Trafford.

Fast forward a year, however, and the outlook reads very differently.

Solskjaer has long since departed and his glut of shiny new signings, bar Ronaldo, were thoroughly underwhelming over the course of the season.

The gravity of the task would not have been lost on Ten Hag when he got down to business at the beginning of the month but the size of the mountain that needs climbing just seems to grow evermore.

That is because United seem to be really struggling to make any sort of dent in the transfer market and have already suffered a number of rejections from some of their targets.

The result is that, while Liverpool and Man City have both already landed their blockbuster deals, United are yet to add to their squad at all.

Unsurprisingly, the club have become the butt of the proverbial transfer window joke as their quiet summer continues apace.
