Manchester United transfer news LIVE Real Sociedad reaction and Crystal Palace fixture updates

Manchester United made a disappointing start to their Europa League campaign last night, losing 1-0 to Spanish outfit Real Sociedad at Old Trafford.

On an evening filled with sadness following the announcement of the death of Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II just 90 minutes before kick-off, Sociedad's Brais Mendez netted the only goal of the game, scoring a controversial 59th minute penalty. The penalty was very harshly awarded for an alleged handball by Lisandro Martinez.

In normal circumstances, United would want to try and get the result out of their system quickly and move on, but Sunday's trip to Crystal Palace is likely to be postponed following the death of the Queen on Thursday afternoon. The Premier League is expected to issue a statement today in relation to this weekend's scheduled fixtures and beyond.

United chose not to host a post-match press conference last night, meaning manager Erik ten Hag did not get the opportunity to look ahead to the game in the event of it going ahead. The Dutchman also did not speak to any of the UEFA rights holders in TV interviews.

The Premier League is expected to issue a statement in relation to this weekend's fixtures at some point today. Tonight's two scheduled matches in the EFL were called off last night, meaning the remainder of the English football calendar's matches are expected to be postponed.

Following last night's defeat to Sociedad, several members of the United squad took to their Twitter accounts to pay tribute to Her Majesty, Queen Elizabeth II.

She died at the age of 96 at Balmoral on Thursday afternoon.
