Manchester United transfer news LIVE Man Utd vs Liverpool FC reaction plus takeover latest

Manchester United suffered their worst defeat of the Premier League era on Sunday afternoon, being hammered 7-0 by arch-rivals Liverpool at Anfield.

Less than 12 months on from their last battering at the hands of the Merseysiders, United were cut to shreds in a devastating second-half performance from the home side, conceding six times without reply. Cody Gakpo had given Liverpool a 1-0 half-time lead, but United, at the stage, were still in the contest after a respectable first-half showing.

However, goals from Darwin Nunez (2), Mohamed Salah (2), Roberto Firmino and a second from Gakpo meant that the Reds suffered their heaviest defeat in almost 100 years, leaving manager Erik ten Hag to try and make sense of a disastrous afternoon at the office. United's second-half showing was nothing short of embarrassing and they will be desperate to get back to winning ways at the first available opportunity against Real Betis in the Europa League on Thursday evening.

Though their title hopes were already faint, defeat to Liverpool has ended any hopes the most ambitious United supporter would have had of the club achieving a famous quadruple this season. They remain third in the table, 14 points behind leaders Arsenal and nine short of Manchester City in second.
