Bastian Schweinsteiger details what Manchester United midfielder Fred did wrong vs Liverpool

Former Manchester United midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger was critical of Fred's role in Liverpool's opening goal on Sunday afternoon.

The German predicted that Erik ten Hag's side would stage a second-half comeback after falling behind against the Merseyside outfit, but United conceded another six goals in the next 45 minutes as they went on to lose 7-0 to their bitter rivals at Anfield.

Ten Hag's men gave a decent account of themselves during an even first period and were somewhat unfortunate not to be ahead in the Premier League clash. However, Cody Gakpo - who was a transfer target for the Reds last summer - broke the deadlock to nudge the home side in front.

Schweinsteiger, who spent two years at Old Trafford, criticised Fred on social media for allowing the Dutchman to cut inside from the left flank, before suggesting that United would come out fighting in the second half.

"The better team leads 1-0. Liverpool take more risks in pressing against the ball and are rewarded with the goal. Come on Manchester United the second half is yours," he wrote on Twitter.

He added in a comment: "Fred doesn't need to push too much to Gakpo. He just needs to close inside and let the ball pass wide. World Cup ritual: Never open the centre!"

Fred attempted to close-down Gakpo on the left wing, but as the Brazilian midfielder made his move towards the former PSV man, he slipped. As a result, it became much easier for Andy Robertson to put his teammate in on goal with an accurate through-ball.
